[WHO.IS] Grant Miller
Grant Miller is the Zooniverse community manager. A former exoplanetary scientist, Grant is now responsible for looking after the interests of Zooniverse volunteers. He is also behind the Zooniverse’s presence on social media and publishes the Daily Zooniverse blog.
What are you working on at the moment?
I'm the community manager at the Zooniverse. I spend most of my days trying to engage with out volunteers in many different ways and get them to keep taking part in our citizen science projects. At the moment we are working on ways to get the citizens even more involved in the scientific process.
What led you to become a scientist?
I was raised by my parents to always be asking questions and looking for answers. That, mixed with a good high school physics teacher and a great university environment, is what is to blame I think.
What one thing should scientists be doing to make the public more aware/interested/engaged in science?
Breaking down the boundary between "scientists" and "public". We are all humans and naturally inquisitive. Scientists are members of the public too!
If you weren’t/couldn’t be a scientist, what would you like to do?
I always dreamed (and still do sometimes) of being a musician. I was in a band for 7 years before doing my PhD.
If money was not an object (and neither were metrics) what would you work on?
The search for extra-terrestrial intelligence
What do you think has been the most significant (or best/worst) scientific advancement in the last 10 years?
It's hard to argue against the detection of the Higgs Boson, but the finding that there are most probably billions of Earth-sized planets in our Galaxy is close to my heart.
What one piece of technology could you not live without?
Tell us about a book that you have read recently that you would recommend?
I read at an embarrassingly low rate, but I would always recommend Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein
How do you relax?
Listening to music, golfing, watching TV shows, drinking with friends (not all at the same time)
